The waters off Tamarin on Mauritius's west coast are home to resident pods of spinner dolphins and sperm whales year-round. From July to October, humpback whales also pass through on their migration route. These are genuine wild encounters — no captive animals, no performance.

What to expect
On the water with giants
Most tours depart from Tamarin or Black River in the early morning, heading into the channel beyond the reef where sperm whales surface to breathe. Sightings are not guaranteed — these are wild animals — but the captain will have local knowledge of current activity.
Spinner dolphins are almost always encountered in the Tamarin Bay area and can often be seen bow-riding the boat. Many operators offer the option to slip quietly into the water to swim alongside them — a profound experience that should be treated with full respect for the animals.

Understanding the difference
Dolphin tours typically take place in the sheltered lagoon and bay areas close to shore. Spinner dolphins are acrobatic, highly social, and regularly seen in groups of 50 to 200.
Whale tours venture further offshore into deeper waters. Sperm whales can dive to over 1,000 metres and hold their breath for up to two hours — you are most likely to spot them at the surface during their breathing cycles. Humpbacks, when present, are often seen breaching dramatically.

- Never chase or intercept a whale's path
- Limit time near any pod to 30 minutes
- No swimming with whales — dolphins only in designated areas
