The bird park houses over 1,500 birds from 150 species — one of the largest collections in the Indian Ocean.
Allow a full day. Combination tickets covering multiple activities are available. Transfer from major hotels can be arranged directly.
Culture & Taste
Rum, Food & Culture
Mauritius has produced rum since the 17th century. The Chamarel Distillery in the island's coloured earth region offers guided tours through the production process — from sugar cane fields to the barrel room — with generous tasting flights included. Rhumerie de Chamarel and St Aubin Estate are the most popular.
Cooking classes are available across the island — from market tours and street food sessions in Port Louis to private villa cooking experiences in Grand Baie. Learning to cook Mauritian food (dholl puri, rougaille, biryani) is one of the best ways to understand the island's multicultural heritage.
Sega dance shows at beach venues bring the island's African-rooted music tradition to life. Most resorts offer weekly shows, but village performances are more authentic.
