Riding a Scooter in Mauritius
Mauritius rides on the left(British system). Scooters are a popular way to get around — they're cheap to rent, easy to park, and perfect for short hops along the coast or between villages. Most rental shops offer 50cc–150cc scooters; some also have larger bikes for experienced riders.
The coastal roads around the north (Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches) and west (Flic en Flac, Le Morne) are the best for scooter touring — wide, well-surfaced, and scenic. Avoid the Port Louis ring road on a scooter during rush hours. The mountain roads in the central plateau are manageable but steeper.
Helmets are legally required and rental shops provide them. Most shops also supply a padlock. Keep your rental paperwork and driving licence with you at all times — police checkpoints are common, especially on coastal routes.
