Scooter hire is a popular and practical way to explore Mauritius — especially the coastal areas around Grand Baie in the north, Flic en Flac and Le Morne in the west, and the quieter east coast. Prices are very affordable, parking is easy, and the coastal roads are well-suited to slower, scenic riding.

To rent a scooter in Mauritius, you need a valid driving licence with motorcycle category (A or A2), a passport or national ID, and a cash deposit of typically MUR 2,000–5,000. Minimum age is usually 18. Helmets are legally required and are provided by rental shops. Most shops also supply a padlock.

Scooters available range from 50cc models for city riding to 125cc and 150cc bikes for longer distances and hillier routes. Daily rates range from approximately MUR 400–600 for a 50cc, MUR 600–900 for 125cc, and MUR 900–1,400 for larger bikes. Weekly rates are significantly cheaper — negotiate for 5+ day rentals.

Safety tips: speed bumps (dos d'ânes) are ubiquitous — slow down dramatically when you see them. Sugar cane trucks on inland roads are wide and slow. Dogs may give chase in rural areas — keep a steady speed rather than braking suddenly. Inspect the scooter before leaving and photograph any existing damage.

Mauritius rides on the left. The most scenic scooter routes are the west coast between Flic en Flac and Le Morne, the north shore between Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux, and the quiet east coast below Mahébourg.
