Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
From August to October, humpback whales migrate through the deep-water channel off the west coast of Mauritius on their way between Antarctic feeding grounds and their tropical breeding waters. Licensed whale-watching operators in Tamarin and Black River run trips into the channel during this window, and sightings of breaching, tail-slapping, and singing humpbacks are virtually guaranteed on flat-sea days. Sperm whales and pods of pilot whales are resident year-round in the deep water off the south-west coast. A minimum 100-metre approach distance is legally enforced.
