Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
The Shivala Hindu temple in Triolet in the north of Mauritius is the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere, visited by tens of thousands of Hindu devotees and curious visitors each year. The vast complex houses multiple shrines, a sacred pond, and towering gopuram gates decorated with hundreds of hand-painted deities in vivid colour. The most important Maha Shivaratri procession in Mauritius begins here. Visitors are welcome outside of active prayer times, dress code applies (shoulders and knees covered), and photography of devotees requires discretion.
