Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
The Central Market (Grand Bazar) of Port Louis is the most authentic and vibrant expression of the island's multicultural daily life, operating since the 1820s on Farquhar Street. The market's labyrinthine interior is divided into sections — fresh produce, spices, clothing, hardware, crafts, and street food — and the sensory experience of moving through the aromatic spice section, past stalls of fresh tropical fruit, and into the dholl puri alleys is an essential Mauritius experience. Best visited on a weekday between 7 and 10 AM when it is at its busiest and most alive.
