Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
The National History Museum in Mahebourg is housed in a colonial mansion and commemorates the famous Naval Battle of Grand Port of August 1810 — the only Napoleonic naval battle in which the French defeated the British, and the only naval victory inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The museum displays weapons, ship models, paintings, and artefacts recovered from the wrecked vessels, alongside exhibits on the island's natural history and the life of enslaved people and indentured workers. The gardens overlook the very bay where the battle was fought.
