Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
Lion Mountain — named for its perfect leonine silhouette when viewed from the south-east — rises 480 metres above Mahebourg and offers a spectacular panorama taking in Blue Bay, the southern lagoon, and the mountains of the interior. The guided 3.5-hour return hike ascends through secondary forest and native scrub to a rocky summit with 360-degree views. The trail is steep but well-marked. A local guide is required and can be arranged through the Mahebourg Tourist Office. The best months are May to November when conditions are dry and clear.
