Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
The hike to the summit of Le Morne Brabant — the UNESCO World Heritage basalt monolith that defines Mauritius's south-western skyline — is the most dramatic and historically charged walk on the island. The 556-metre summit was used as a refuge by runaway enslaved people in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the panoramic view from the top takes in the entire south-western coastline, the Bel Ombre hills, and the deep blue Indian Ocean. The 2.5-hour ascent requires a licensed local guide, a regulated number of hikers per day, and a prior permit. The final section involves a near-vertical scramble.
