Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
Île aux Aigrettes is a 26-hectare coral island nature reserve managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, dedicated to recreating the pre-human ecosystem of Mauritius. Giant Aldabra tortoises act as surrogate Mauritian tortoises (the originals were hunted to extinction), grazing the restored native dry coastal forest. Rodrigues fruit bats, pink pigeons, and olive white-eyes have all been reintroduced to the island as part of one of the world's most acclaimed island restoration programmes. A 45-minute boat trip from Pointe d'Esny brings visitors to the island with a guided naturalist tour included.
