Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
The south coast of Mauritius contains the island's most dramatic coastal scenery, centred on the basalt rock formations at Gris-Gris and the extraordinary Rochester Falls — a broad, column-carved waterfall where the Savanne River tumbles over perfectly hexagonal basalt pillars into a deep green pool. The 5-kilometre coastal walking trail linking Rochester Falls with the Gris-Gris viewpoint passes sea caves, natural arches, and wild surf breaking against the lava coast. The walk is best done in the morning when light catches the basalt formations.
