Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
Grand Bassin — known as Ganga Talao — is a crater lake high in the Black River Gorges that is the most sacred Hindu site in the Indian Ocean. The lake is believed to be connected by an underground water system to the holy River Ganges in India, and each year during the Maha Shivaratri festival in February or March, hundreds of thousands of devotees walk barefoot from across the island to collect holy water from the lake as an offering to Lord Shiva. Giant statues of Shiva and Durga guard the lake entrance, and numerous shrines and small temples cluster around the shore year-round.
