Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
Fort Adelaide, known as La Citadelle, is a British-era hilltop fortification overlooking Port Louis from its commanding position on the ridge above the city. Built between 1834 and 1840 to house a garrison overlooking the capital, the fort's star-shaped ramparts, gun emplacements, and underground magazine are well-preserved and open to public exploration. The panoramic view from the battlements over Port Louis, the harbour, and the surrounding mountains is one of the finest urban viewpoints in the Indian Ocean. The walk up from the city centre takes 20 minutes and passes through historic residential neighbourhoods.
