Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
The Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel are a geological curiosity unique in the world — a small area of undulating sand dunes formed from volcanic ash that has cooled into distinct bands of red, brown, violet, green, blue, and yellow. The colours are most vivid after rain, and the dunes are self-renewing — attempts to mix the layers have consistently resulted in the colours naturally separating over time. The adjacent Chamarel Waterfall, which plunges 100 metres in three separate cascades into a pool surrounded by tropical forest, is visible from the same viewing area.
