Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
The waters off Black River on the west coast of Mauritius are widely considered among the world's top ten big game fishing destinations. The seafloor drops precipitously from the reef to 700 metres within a kilometre of the shore, and the deep channel teems with blue marlin, black marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and dorado. The marlin season peaks from November to April when fish weighing over 1,000 lbs have been landed. Black River's fleet of purpose-built game fishing boats is one of the most professional in the Indian Ocean, and the town hosts the prestigious Mauritius Marlin Tournament each year.
