Le Morne Cultural Landscape — UNESCO
UNESCO cultural landscape commemorating the enslaved people who took refuge on Le Morne's cliffs — a symbol of freedom.
Aapravasi Ghat on the Port Louis waterfront is one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Mauritius and the most important historical site on the island. Between 1849 and 1923, over 500,000 indentured labourers from India, China, Madagascar, and East Africa arrived at these stone steps to begin new lives working in Mauritius's sugar cane fields. The site preserves the original immigration depot buildings, including processing rooms, hospital, and a small shrine, and the attached museum tells the extraordinary story of the indentured labour system and its legacy on Mauritian society. A profoundly moving and important visit.
