C-Care Wellkin

C-Care Wellkin, which opened in Moka in 2020, represents the most significant investment in private healthcare infrastructure on the island in a generation. The hospital was purpose-built on a 5.5-hectare site near the Ebène Cybercity and the emerging Moka smart city development, in a location that is increasingly central to where Mauritius's professional and residential population lives and works. The building itself is striking by any standard — a contemporary structure of glass and stone with a landscaped healing garden, deliberately designed to move away from the institutional atmosphere that even the best older hospitals struggle to escape.

Wellkin operates across 21 specialties with 130 beds, including single rooms with hotel-quality furnishings, private suites, and a dedicated concierge service for international patients. The emergency department, open 24 hours, is one of the most modern on the island, with dedicated rapid assessment bays, point-of-care testing, and direct admission pathways to the ICU or surgical theatre. The oncology unit — equipped with a linear accelerator for radiotherapy and a day oncology suite for chemotherapy — has been particularly important for patients who previously had to travel to South Africa for cancer treatment.

The hospital's diagnostic imaging suite includes a Philips 3T MRI, a 256-slice CT scanner, and a digital fluoroscopy unit — all more recent installations than at any other facility on the island. The pathology laboratory is CAP-accredited and handles complex haematological and molecular testing in-house. The maternity unit offers water births and a dedicated lactation consultant service. Wellkin has been particularly proactive in recruiting Mauritian specialists who trained abroad and returned — the cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery departments are staffed by consultants with post-graduate qualifications from London, Paris, and Cape Town.

For international patients and expatriates, the hospital has a dedicated international patient services desk and is a direct-billing provider for most major international health insurers including AXA, Cigna, Allianz, and BUPA. Consultations are available in English, French, and Kreol.
