Brown Sequard Mental Healthcare Hospital

Brown Sequard Hospital is Mauritius's national public psychiatric and mental health facility, named after the 19th-century Mauritian-born neurologist Charles-Édouard Brown-Séquard. It is the primary inpatient centre for severe mental illness on the island, providing acute psychiatric admission, stabilisation, and longer-term inpatient care for conditions including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, and substance use disorders.

The hospital operates both an acute admission ward for crisis presentations and longer-stay wards for patients requiring extended stabilisation or residential care. The addiction medicine unit treats both alcohol and drug dependency, and runs detoxification and rehabilitation programmes in collaboration with the Ministry of Health's community mental health teams. Community-based outpatient clinics, held at health centres across the island, are coordinated from Brown Sequard and allow patients to receive psychiatric follow-up without the need for hospital admission.

Most acute psychiatric presentations — acute psychotic episodes, severe mania, and active suicidal ideation — should be brought to the emergency department of the nearest public hospital first, where an initial psychiatric assessment will be conducted and, if admission is indicated, transfer to Brown Sequard arranged. Private psychiatric consultations are available through several private hospitals and consulting rooms, including C-Care Darné and Wellkin, for those who prefer or have access to private care.
