Victoria Hospital

Victoria Hospital in Candos, Quatre-Bornes is the largest public hospital in Mauritius and the national referral centre for complex cases across most medical and surgical specialties. With over 800 beds, a 24-hour emergency department that receives the island's most serious trauma cases, and specialist units covering cardiology, neurosurgery, nephrology, thoracic surgery, and neonatology, it functions as the apex of the island's public healthcare pyramid. Care is entirely free for Mauritian citizens and residents; visitors and tourists are also entitled to emergency treatment without charge, one of the more remarkable features of the Mauritian public health system.

The emergency department handles several hundred presentations per day. Triage is in place, and life-threatening cases — major trauma, stroke, cardiac arrest, acute surgical emergencies — are seen immediately. Non-urgent cases may wait several hours, particularly during peak periods (evenings and weekends). The hospital's intensive care and high-dependency units are among the most advanced in the public sector, and the cardiac unit performs angioplasty and pacemaker insertion. Neurosurgery handles intracranial haematomas, spinal cord injuries, and tumour resections that would otherwise require transfer to South Africa.

For expatriate residents, Victoria Hospital is the practical first port of call for genuine emergencies in the central plateau area, with private hospital care appropriate for less urgent cases. Many private specialists in Mauritius also hold public sector appointments at Victoria and conduct outpatient clinics there — which means that the quality of medical judgment in the public system is often the same as in the private sector, even if the surroundings are considerably more basic. Pharmaceutical prescriptions issued by Victoria doctors can be filled at the hospital pharmacy free of charge for entitled residents.
