Question 1

How do I call the fire service in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

The emergency number for fire services in Mauritius is 995. The Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) operates stations across the island including Curepipe, Port Louis, Vacoas, Flacq and Mahébourg. The MFRS also handles hazardous materials incidents and technical rescue.

Question 2

What does the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service do?

Accepted Answer

The MFRS responds to structural fires, vehicle fires, bush fires, hazardous chemical incidents, water rescues and road traffic accidents. They also conduct fire safety inspections of commercial premises and public buildings, and provide community fire safety education.

Question 3

Is Mauritius at risk from wildfires?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the dry winter months (June–October) see increased bush and grass fire risk, particularly in the south and west of the island. Sugar cane fields are burned at harvest time (June–November) under controlled conditions. Avoid lighting open fires during dry periods and follow MFRS safety guidelines.
