Eureka Waterfall: Discover This Majestic Hidden Gem in Mauritius

By Mauritius Life Editorial17 May 20262 min read

The Eureka Waterfall near Moka is a beautiful cascade set in a dramatic gorge that can be combined with a visit to the famous Eureka colonial house, offering a rewarding half-day experience in the Mauritian highlands.

The Eureka Estate and Its Waterfall

In the hills above Moka, the Eureka colonial house is one of the finest examples of 19th-century Mauritian architecture open to the public. Built in 1830, the house has 109 doors and windows — a design allowing trade winds to cool the building naturally. Less well-known is the spectacular waterfall that plunges into the gorge on the estate.

The Waterfall

The Eureka Waterfall drops into a narrow, deeply forested gorge. The falls plunge into a dark pool surrounded by lush vegetation, with the sound of the cascade reverberating off the basalt gorge walls. The setting is atmospheric — it feels hidden and discovered, even within the estate grounds.

How to Get There

Located at Moka in the central highlands. From Port Louis, approximately 12 kilometres south-east via the motorway (20–25 minutes). From the airport, approximately 30 kilometres north-west (35–40 minutes). A small admission fee covers access to the house and grounds including the waterfall trail.

The Trail to the Falls

A marked trail leads from the main house through estate gardens and into the gorge through dense vegetation — tree ferns, bamboo, and native forest trees. The walk takes approximately 20–30 minutes each way and involves some uneven ground; sturdy footwear is recommended.

The Colonial House

The Eureka house guided tours bring the history of the estate vividly to life. A traditional Mauritian lunch can be arranged at the estate restaurant, serving authentic home-style Mauritian cuisine.
