The best beaches in Mauritius

Mauritius has over 160km of coastline. Here is how to find the right beach for you.

Best for calm lagoon swimming: Trou aux Biches (north)

Stunning white sand lined with casuarinas, impossibly turquoise shallow lagoon. Perfect for children and swimmers. Also excellent: Mon Choisy, Pereybere.

Best for snorkelling: Blue Bay (south)

Blue Bay Marine Park is a protected reserve. Coral gardens with parrotfish, surgeonfish, and lionfish accessible directly from the beach. Best at high tide.

Best for kite surfing: Le Morne (southwest)

World-famous for consistent SE trade winds. The One Eye reef break is one of the most photographed surf spots in the Indian Ocean. Best July-September.

Best for families: Flic en Flac (west)

Gently shelving beach, few currents in the lagoon, lifeguards in season, shade trees, facilities close at hand.

Best for luxury: Belle Mare (east)

Powdery white sand, clear turquoise water. Constance Belle Mare Plage hotel beach is world-renowned. Public beach access available. Note: east coast is windier June-September.

Beach safety

  • Swim only inside the reef lagoon
  • Observe warning flags (red = no swimming)
  • Rip currents at reef passes β€” do not swim at passes
  • Wear reef shoes on rocky reef areas (stonefish risk)
