Alexandra Falls Viewpoint: A Hidden Gem in Mauritius
The Alexandra Falls viewpoint in the Black River Gorges National Park offers one of the most spectacular and accessible panoramas in Mauritius, where a cascading waterfall plunges into a lush forested gorge.
Discovering Alexandra Falls
Deep within the Black River Gorges National Park, Alexandra Falls is one of the most rewarding natural attractions in Mauritius. The falls drop approximately 18 metres into a verdant gorge, and the viewpoint above offers a sweeping perspective across layers of forest canopy stretching toward the coast.
How to Get There
Alexandra Falls viewpoint is on the Route du Parc, the main road traversing the Black River Gorges National Park between Chamarel and Black River. It is well signposted. There is a small parking area and admission is free.
The View
The viewpoint is a short walk from the car park. Below, the Rivière Noire cuts through dense native forest, and the waterfall is framed by tree ferns and flowering endemic plants. On clear mornings, you can see all the way to the coast.
Flora and Fauna
The Black River Gorges National Park protects the largest remaining area of native forest in Mauritius. Listen for the calls of endemic birds including the Mauritius kestrel, the pink pigeon, and the echo parakeet.
