About Dr Nilamber Vet

Dr Nilamber Vet provides veterinary services to pets and animals in the north of Mauritius.

Veterinary services in Mauritius have improved significantly over the last decade. Private veterinary clinics handle routine care, vaccinations, surgery, and emergency consultations for dogs, cats, and smaller pets. The Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare (MSAW) operates low-cost clinics for animal sterilisation and welfare cases.

Standard veterinary services available across most clinics include annual vaccination programmes (rabies, distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis for dogs; FVRCP and rabies for cats), microchipping, spaying and neutering, dental cleaning under anaesthesia, flea and tick treatment, and consultations for common illnesses and injuries.

Importing pets into Mauritius requires an import permit from the Ministry of Agro-Industry, a veterinary health certificate from the country of origin, valid vaccinations including rabies, and a mandatory quarantine period of 21 days at the Quatre Bornes quarantine facility (for pets arriving from approved low-rabies-risk countries). Starting the paperwork 3–4 months before your travel date is strongly recommended.

For expats moving to Mauritius with pets, the local vet network is a good first port of call for post-quarantine check-ups and establishing an ongoing vaccination and healthcare routine. Emergency out-of-hours care is available at some clinics — call ahead to confirm availability.
