About Le Fangourin Tea Estate Restaurant

Set within the rolling hills of the Bois Chéri Tea Estate in the south-east of Mauritius, Le Fangourin is one of the island's most distinctive dining experiences. The estate itself dates to 1892 and is the oldest operating tea plantation in Mauritius, and the restaurant makes full use of that heritage — presenting menus built around the estate's own teas and the rich Creole culinary tradition of the island.

The lunch menu is the main event. Diners choose from a Creole tasting selection that pairs courses with specific estate-grown tea infusions, guided by the resident tea sommelier. The menu changes seasonally but typically features dishes such as grilled rougaille, curried octopus, freshwater prawn, and locally grown vegetables, finishing with a tea-infused dessert. Non-tea-drinkers can enjoy fresh juice, and a modest wine list is available alongside the signature tea pairings.

The setting is almost unmatched anywhere on the island. The veranda overlooks a vast sweep of tea plantation, with the Indian Ocean visible on clear days and the forested hills of the south framing the horizon. The dining room seats around 80 and fills quickly — advance reservation is strongly recommended, especially between June and August and during the December holiday period.

Beyond the restaurant, the estate offers a self-guided tea museum walk and a small distillery tour, making Le Fangourin an ideal anchor for a half-day excursion into the south. The Bois Chéri estate shop sells estate-packaged teas and rum to take home. The restaurant is typically a 1.5-hour drive from Grand Baie, and most visitors combine it with a stop at Gris Gris beach, the Mahébourg waterfront market, or the Rum Route through the south and east.

Dress code is smart casual. Lunch service runs approximately 11:00am to 3:00pm. Confirm opening hours before visiting as the restaurant operates to the estate's own schedule and may close for private events. Booking by phone or email in advance is recommended to secure your preferred time and to avoid disappointment.
