Question 1

Are there pharmacies in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Yes — pharmacies are widespread across Mauritius, found in all towns and many villages. They are well stocked with prescription and over-the-counter medications, including many brand names familiar to European and international travellers. Most are open Monday to Saturday; some larger ones operate on Sundays.

Question 2

Can I get prescription medicines in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most common prescription medications are available in Mauritius. A local prescription from a Mauritius-registered doctor is required. Bring sufficient supply of any unusual or specialist medications from home, as not all brands are stocked. Generic equivalents are widely available.

Question 3

Are medicines cheaper in Mauritius than in the UK?

Accepted Answer

Generic medications are significantly cheaper. Some branded drugs cost similarly to UK prices. Without health insurance, out-of-pocket pharmacy costs are lower than in the UK or Europe for most standard medications. Residents can access free medication at public health centres.

Question 4

What are pharmacy opening hours in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Standard pharmacy hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am–5pm and Saturday 8:30am–12pm. Some larger pharmacies in Grand Baie, Quatre Bornes and Curepipe are open later. Sunday and public holiday duty rosters ensure at least one pharmacy per district is open — local newspapers publish the duty list.
