Lakaz Chamarel — 'lakaz' meaning 'home' in Mauritian Creole — is a small, owner-run lodge in the highlands village of Chamarel that has elevated the concept of intimate accommodation to an art form. Just eight suites are scattered across a hillside property with sweeping views of the Black River Gorges on one side and the coastal plains falling to the ocean on the other. The suites are each individually decorated by local artists and craftspeople: one features a four-poster carved from local takamaka wood; another has a bathroom open to the sky with a tree growing through the floor. The communal spaces are genuinely social — a library bar stocked with Chamarel rums and Mauritian novels, a terrace where guests gather at sunset to watch the gorge fog roll in, and a kitchen garden where the chef leads foraging walks before breakfast. The food is exceptional: a six-course dinner changes daily based on seasonal produce and always accompanied by a rum pairing that demonstrates the extraordinary range of Mauritius's agricole production. There is no beach, no pool (though there is a natural plunge pool fed by a spring), and no animation programme. What Lakaz Chamarel has instead is a profound sense of place — highland Mauritius in its most elemental and generous form.
