Astroea Beach Hotel sits on a ribbon of pale sand between Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce on the east coast, an area characterised by some of the deepest and most translucent lagoon water on the island. The hotel is small by Mauritian standards — around 80 rooms — and that intimacy is its quiet selling point. It attracts couples and honeymooners who want direct beach access, a calm and friendly atmosphere, and a location from which the east coast's many pleasures — glass-bottom boat trips to Île aux Cerfs, kite-surfing at Anse La Raie, and the artisan market at Mahebourg — are easily reachable. Rooms are decorated in warm earth tones with local artwork and open directly onto gardens or the beachfront. Junior suites with sea view are only modestly more expensive and make a meaningful difference to the experience. The restaurant has a terrace above the water's edge where dinner, grilled-fish plates and Creole curries accompanied by the sound of small waves, becomes something genuinely memorable. The pool area is well-planted and shaded — a relief around midday in the hot months. The east coast's notorious trade winds keep the beach breezy and the water sparkly even in the height of summer. Astroea does not try to be a five-star experience and is all the more honest for it; it offers clean, well-run facilities and direct access to one of Mauritius's most beautiful stretches of coast.
