Question 1

What healthcare options are available in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Mauritius has both a public health system and a well-developed private sector. Public hospitals are free for citizens but can have long wait times. Private hospitals such as Apollo Bramwell, Clinique Darné and Wellkin offer faster access, modern equipment, and consultants trained internationally. Most expats use private healthcare and cover costs through international health insurance.

Question 2

Do doctors in Mauritius speak English?

Accepted Answer

Yes — virtually all private healthcare practitioners in Mauritius speak English and French. Mauritius is a bilingual country and all medical professionals train in English or French. In public hospitals, staff communicate with foreign patients in English or French without difficulty.

Question 3

How do international health insurance plans work in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Most major international health insurers have direct billing agreements with private hospitals in Mauritius, meaning you do not pay upfront. Check with your insurer before admission. For GP and specialist visits at smaller clinics, you may need to pay and claim reimbursement. Cigna, Bupa, Aetna and AXA are among the insurers widely accepted at private facilities.

Question 4

Are pharmacies easily accessible in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Pharmacies are widespread across the island, including in all main towns and many suburban areas. Most are open until 6pm on weekdays and until noon on Saturdays; some operate extended hours. Specialist clinics for dentistry, physiotherapy, ophthalmology and dermatology are concentrated in Port Louis, Ebène and the central plateau towns.
