Question 1

What gym and fitness options are available in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Mauritius has a growing fitness sector, with gyms, crossfit boxes, yoga studios, pilates centres and martial arts academies across the island. Major gym chains operate in the main population centres. Boutique studios focus on specialist disciplines. Many hotels have well-equipped fitness centres accessible to non-residents by day pass, making them a practical option when travelling between regions.

Question 2

Are there outdoor fitness and sports activities in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

The island's landscape makes outdoor fitness highly rewarding. Hiking trails cross the Black River Gorges National Park and climb peaks including Le Pouce and Pieter Both. Cycling routes run along the coast and through the interior. Open-water swimming, stand-up paddleboarding and beach running are popular along the coast. Several running clubs organise weekend group runs across different parts of the island.

Question 3

Is there a martial arts and combat sports scene in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Mauritius has an active martial arts community with clubs and academies offering taekwondo, karate, judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing and MMA. The Mauritius Taekwondo Federation, Mauritius Judo Association and Mauritius Boxing Federation run structured competition programmes and grading events. Several academies welcome expats and beginners alongside competitive athletes.

Question 4

Can I continue training at my home sport or fitness level after relocating to Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

In most cases yes. Mauritius has internationally affiliated clubs in taekwondo, judo, swimming, athletics, tennis and golf, so your existing grading or ranking is typically recognised. For niche sports, the expat community often self-organises through Facebook groups and WhatsApp communities. The island's year-round warm climate is generally an advantage for outdoor training compared to most countries of origin.
