Question 1

What schooling options are available in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Mauritius offers state schools following the local curriculum, private Mauritian schools, and international schools following the IB, Cambridge IGCSE, or French baccalaureate programmes. International schools are concentrated in the north of the island and the central plateau, catering primarily to the expat community. Most operate in English and French.

Question 2

Are there English-medium schools in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the state school system is primarily English-medium with French as a second language, and several private and international schools teach entirely in English. The International School of Mauritius, Le Bocage International School, and Northfields International High School are among the most established English-medium options for expat families relocating to the island.

Question 3

What universities and higher education institutions are in Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Mauritius has the University of Mauritius, the Université des Mascareignes, and the Open University of Mauritius. Overseas institutions including Middlesex University and Curtin University have campuses on the island. MCCI Business School (the chamber of commerce school) is a well-regarded option for undergraduate and postgraduate business programmes in both English and French.

Question 4

How does the Mauritius education system work?

Accepted Answer

The Mauritius education system follows a nine-year continuous basic education framework for ages 5 to 16, followed by upper secondary and then tertiary education. The system is broadly modelled on the British and French systems. French and English are both languages of instruction. State schooling is free; private and international schools charge fees ranging from moderate to substantial.
