The Nine Districts of Mauritius: A Complete Guide
Mauritius is divided into nine administrative districts, each with its own distinct character, geography, and attractions — understanding the districts helps visitors and expats navigate the island effectively.
Understanding Mauritius''s Administrative Divisions
Mauritius is a small island — roughly 65 kilometres from north to south and 45 kilometres from east to west — but it is surprisingly diverse, divided into nine districts.
1. Port Louis
The capital district on the north-west coast is the commercial and cultural heart of Mauritius, featuring the Central Market, Citadelle fortress, the Aapravasi Ghat (UNESCO World Heritage Site), and Caudan Waterfront.
2. Pamplemousses
North of the capital, famous for the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden — one of the oldest botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere.
3. Rivière du Rempart
The north-east district includes Cap Malheureux and the resort areas of Grand Baie and Pereybère — the most developed tourist coast in Mauritius.
4. Flacq
The east coast district is home to some of the finest resort hotels at Belle Mare and Trou d''Eau Douce, plus the departure point for Île aux Cerfs.
5. Grand Port
Contains Mahébourg and Blue Bay Marine Park — one of the finest coral reef systems in the Indian Ocean.
6. Savanne
The southernmost district includes the dramatic Gris Gris coastline, Rochester Falls, and the beginning of the Black River Gorges.
7. Black River (Rivière Noire)
Home to the Black River Gorges National Park, Tamarin, and the Le Morne Brabant peninsula (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
8. Moka
The central upland district, home to the administrative capital Réduit, several universities, and a growing residential population.
9. Plaines Wilhems
The most populous district, encompassing Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, Vacoas, and Beau Bassin–Rose Hill.
