Mauritius Visa Requirements for UK Citizens: Everything You Need to Know

By Mauritius Life Editorial31 March 20263 min read

UK passport holders get 180 days visa-free in Mauritius. Here's what you need on arrival, how the 180-day rule works, and your options for longer stays.

Do UK Citizens Need a Visa for Mauritius?

No — UK passport holders do not need a visa to visit Mauritius for tourism or short-term stays. You will be granted entry on arrival for up to 180 days per year. This applies to British Citizens, British Overseas Territories Citizens (with the right of abode), and British Nationals (Overseas) holding a BN(O) passport. Always check your specific passport category if you hold one of the less common British travel documents.

What You Need on Arrival

  • A valid UK passport with at least six months' validity beyond your intended stay
  • A return or onward ticket — immigration officers can and do ask for this
  • Proof of sufficient funds (a bank statement or credit card is usually sufficient)
  • An address in Mauritius (your hotel booking confirmation or a letter from a host)

You will fill in an arrival card on the plane. Keep the departure stub — you will need it when you leave.

The 180-Day Rule

The 180 days is cumulative within a rolling 12-month period, not a single continuous stay. In practice, immigration officers exercise discretion and most tourists who stay three to four weeks face no issues. Extended stays approaching or exceeding 90 days in a single visit can attract questions, particularly if you appear to be living and working on the island without a permit.

Staying Longer: Your Options

If you want to stay beyond the tourist allowance, reside permanently, or work in Mauritius, you will need a formal permit. The main options for UK nationals are:

  • Premium Visa: A one-year renewable visa for remote workers, retirees, and those not earning income in Mauritius. Apply online at the Economic Development Board website before or shortly after arrival. There is no minimum income threshold, though you should demonstrate sufficient funds.
  • Occupation Permit: For those employed by a Mauritius-registered company (minimum salary MUR 60,000/month) or investors and self-employed individuals. Valid for up to 10 years and renewable.
  • Retired Non-Citizen Permit: For those 50+ who transfer at least USD 1,500/month to a Mauritius bank account.

Working While on a Tourist Visa

Working for a Mauritius-based employer without an Occupation Permit is illegal. However, remote working for an overseas employer while on a tourist allowance sits in a grey area — the government's introduction of the Premium Visa reflects a pragmatic acknowledgment of this reality, and applying for one removes ambiguity.

Entry During the Cyclone Season

There are no travel restrictions related to the cyclone season (November to April), but the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises UK travellers to check weather forecasts and follow local emergency guidance if a cyclone warning is issued during their stay. Travel insurance that covers natural events is strongly recommended for visits during this period.

Practical Notes

  • SSR International Airport has a dedicated immigration hall for arriving passengers; queues can be long on peak afternoon arrivals — budget 30–45 minutes from touchdown to baggage claim.
  • There is no e-Visa system for UK nationals — entry is fully on arrival.
  • Your passport will be stamped with the permitted stay duration on arrival; check this stamp before leaving the immigration hall and query it immediately if the duration is shorter than expected.
