Le Morne Kitesurfing Guide: Everything You Need to Know
Le Morne is one of the world's best kitesurf spots. Here's everything you need — the wind, the spots, the schools, and where to stay.
Why Le Morne?
Le Morne, on the south-west tip of Mauritius, is consistently ranked among the top five kitesurfing destinations in the world. The combination of a large, flat-water lagoon on the lee side of the peninsula, consistent south-east trade winds, and an ocean-side break for experienced wave riders creates an environment that caters to every level — from complete beginners learning on flat water to professionals riding the outer reef break known as One Eye.
The Wind
The south-east trade winds at Le Morne blow reliably from May through November, typically averaging 15–25 knots. July and August see the strongest winds, often holding above 20 knots throughout the day. The wind is side-shore to side-onshore on the lagoon side, making it safe for learning. Outside the trade wind season (December to April), wind is lighter and less consistent — advanced riders visit for wave sailing but it's not recommended as a learning period.
The Spots
The Lagoon (IKO Lagoon): The flat water inside the reef is the primary teaching and progression area. Water depth ranges from knee-deep to chest-deep depending on the tide and position, and the bottom is sand — safe for falls. Beginners progress quickly here due to the reliable wind and absence of chop.
One Eye: The wave break outside the reef at the tip of the Le Morne Peninsula is one of the most photographed wave kite spots in the world. A steep, barrelling left-hand reef break, it is strictly for advanced riders only. Getting out through the reef pass requires local knowledge; never attempt it without a briefing from a local instructor.
Kite Lagoon/La Prairie: A shallow, protected area slightly north of the main Le Morne beach, favoured by freestyle riders and those learning new tricks.
Kite Schools
Several IKA (International Kiteboarding Association) and IKO-certified schools operate at Le Morne. Reputable options include ION Club Le Morne (part of the global ION Club network, strong instructor quality), KBA Le Morne, and Funboard Center Le Morne. Beginners' courses typically run over three days and cost approximately MUR 15,000–20,000 (USD 320–430) including equipment and instruction.
Equipment Rental
All major schools offer equipment rental for riders who have their licence (IKO Level 3 or equivalent). A 12m kite and board rents for approximately MUR 3,500–4,500 per half day. Equipment quality at the better schools is generally good — modern Cabrinha, North, or Duotone kites in well-maintained condition.
Accommodation at Le Morne
The Le Morne peninsula itself has several upscale hotels including the Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort and LUX* Le Morne. For budget kite travellers, guesthouses in the village of La Gaulette (5km north) cost MUR 1,500–3,000 per night and are popular with long-stay kitesurfers. Self-catering villas in the area provide the best combination of value and convenience for groups.
Practical Notes
- The Le Morne beach access road can get congested in high season — arrive early (before 9am) to secure a good parking spot near the schools.
- Reef shoes are essential if you plan to walk on the reef flat; the coral is sharp and sea urchins are present.
- Bring high-SPF waterproof sunscreen — the tropical sun and reflective water surface will burn you faster than you expect.
- The lagoon current runs north — if you get into trouble, drift with the current rather than fighting it and signal for the safety boat.
