Golf in Mauritius: A Complete Guide to the Island's Best Courses
Mauritius has quietly become one of the Indian Ocean's premier golf destinations. Nine championship-standard courses — many designed by legends of the game — combined with year-round sunshine, jaw-dropping scenery, and some of the world's best resort accommodation make this island a compelling bucket-list destination for golfers.
Why Golf in Mauritius?
The weather: Mauritius sits between 20°S latitude — subtropical, with average temperatures of 24–30°C year-round. The best golfing season runs from April to November (the dry season). December–March brings humidity and occasional tropical rainfall, but rarely disrupts a full round.
The courses: From the famous Ernie Els-designed Anahita course to the historic Royal Mauritius Golf Club, the island has genuine variety — parkland, links-style, and mountain-backdrop layouts.
The pace: Unlike golf in the UK or US, there's rarely a wait on a Mauritius course. Outside of the peak holiday season, you'll typically walk straight onto the first tee.
The Best Courses in Mauritius
1. Anahita Golf Course — East Coast
Par: 71 | Designer: Ernie Els
The finest course on the island by most measures. Designed by Ernie Els and opened in 2007, Anahita sits on the east coast as part of the Four Seasons Resort. The layout weaves through water features, natural wetlands, and native vegetation. The 18th hole — a dramatic par 5 finishing to a peninsula green surrounded by the Indian Ocean — is one of the most photographed holes in the Indian Ocean region.
Best for: Golfers wanting the best all-round course experience.
2. Île aux Cerfs Golf Club — East Coast
Par: 72 | Designer: Bernhard Langer
The most dramatic setting on the island. Île aux Cerfs is a private island off the east coast, reached by a 5-minute boat transfer from Trou d'Eau Douce. The Bernhard Langer-designed course occupies the southern portion of the island, with the lagoon visible from almost every hole.
Best for: Golfers who want scenery as much as challenge. The boat ride alone is worth it.
3. Heritage Golf Club — South Coast
Par: 72 | Yards: 7,154 | Designer: Peter Matkovich
Part of the Heritage Resorts complex in Bel Ombre, this is the longest course on the island and a genuine test for low-handicap players. The layout rolls through 148 hectares of former sugar cane land between the mountains and the coast.
Hosted the Volvo World Match Play championship in 2012 and 2013.
Best for: Serious golfers looking for a proper challenge.
4. Constance Belle Mare Plage Golf (Links & Legend) — East Coast
Par: 71/72
Two courses at one property — the Legend course is parkland with water hazards and mature trees; the Links course has a Scottish-links feel that's unusual in the Indian Ocean. Both are maintained to a high standard.
Best for: Those staying at Constance or wanting two very different course experiences.
5. Tamarina Golf Club — West Coast
Par: 72 | Designer: Rodney Wright & Derek Crawford
The best course on the west coast, set in the Tamarin Valley against the backdrop of the Rempart and Trois Mamelles mountains. The 15th hole is the signature: a par 3 playing downhill to a green framed by a reservoir and mountains.
Best for: Golfers based on the west coast.
6. Avalon Golf Estate — Central Highlands
Par: 72 | Designer: David Feherty
A course at 500m elevation in the cooler central highlands. Temperatures are noticeably lower than the coast — welcome in summer.
7. Royal Mauritius Golf Club — Curepipe
Par: 70 | Established: 1844
The oldest golf club on the island. A members' club set in the highlands above Curepipe. The course itself is shorter and less spectacular than the resort courses, but has real character — mature trees, a classic clubhouse, and the most authentic golf club atmosphere on the island.
Best for: History, atmosphere, and affordability.
Practical Information
Green fees: Range from MUR 2,500–4,000 (Royal Mauritius) to EUR 170–200 (Anahita). Most courses charge in euros for overseas visitors.
Clubs: All courses offer rental clubs. Serious golfers should bring their own or hire premium sets from resort pro shops.
Dress code: Collared shirt and tailored shorts/trousers required at all courses. Jeans and trainers are not permitted.
Best months: June–September for maximum consistency. April/May and October are excellent shoulder months.
Playing multiple courses: A week in Mauritius could comfortably include 4–5 courses. A suggested schedule: Anahita + Île aux Cerfs (east), Heritage (south), Tamarina (west), Royal Mauritius (highlands).
