Driving in Mauritius on a foreign licence
Foreign licences from most countries are valid for the first 12 months of residence. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended.
Exchange after 12 months
Visit the National Transport Authority (NTA) in Port Louis with: original foreign licence, Mauritius residence card, passport, two passport photos, and ~MUR 500 fee.
No driving test required for licences from recognised countries (EU, UK, South Africa, Australia). Processing: 2–4 weeks.
Driving conditions
- Drive on the left
- Speed limits: 50km/h urban, 80km/h main roads
- Blood alcohol limit: 0.05%
- Seatbelts mandatory for all occupants
