Belle Mare Beach
The postcard beach of Mauritius — powdery white sand, impossibly turquoise water, and three kilometres of sheltered…
Tamarin is the place on the island where people come for the wave and stay for the life. The left-hand reef break at Tamarin Bay, breaking over a shallow basalt reef at the mouth of the Tamarin River, is the most jealously protected surf spot in Mauritius — locals have historically been known to discourage visitors from surfing it, and the etiquette in the water is strict. For those who have the surfing ability to handle a fast left-hander over a shallow reef and the cultural intelligence to understand the local hierarchy, it is a remarkable wave: long, hollow in its middle section, and consistent from May through October when the south-easterly swell tracks up the west coast.
The bay is also one of the most reliable places in the Indian Ocean to encounter wild spinner dolphins. A resident pod of 100-plus dolphins uses the sheltered waters of Tamarin Bay as their daytime resting area, and in the early morning — before the boat tours arrive — they are often visible from the beach itself, their dorsal fins cutting the glassy water at low speed. Boat operators from the beach offer dolphin-watching excursions that leave before sunrise for the best experience before the open-ocean dolphin tours from Tamarin begin their multiple daily runs.
The village of Tamarin retains the character of a genuine surf town in a way that no amount of tourism development has yet erased: the morning coffee ritual at the beachside café, the wax-handed discussions of the previous swell at the surf shop, the school-aged children paddling out on oversized boards. The beach is backed by scrub vegetation and the Black River mountains, with the salt flats of the old Tamarin salt works visible to the south — a landscape that belongs to the west coast's particular wild beauty rather than the manicured aesthetic of the north coast resorts.
