Tamarind Falls — locally known as Sept Cascades (Seven Waterfalls) — are a series of seven cascades tumbling down the Tamarin River through a deep forested gorge in the western highlands near Henrietta. They are one of the best adventure destinations in Mauritius, offering everything from a gentle forest walk to full canyoning with rappelling down the faces of the falls.
The lower falls can be reached on foot from the village of Henrietta, following a track through sugar cane and then into the gorge forest. The first two cascades are accessible in about 45 minutes and offer good swimming in natural rock pools. The forest here is dense with indigenous tree ferns, ficus, and ebony, and the sound of the river is constant as you descend.
The full experience — seeing all seven falls — requires a canyoning guide. The route descends by rope down three waterfall faces, traverses exposed rock ledges, swims through gorge pools, and scrambles through the forest between falls. The gorge walls rise steeply on both sides and the light filters down in columns through the canopy. The canyoning takes 3–4 hours and is rated moderate — previous rope experience is useful but not required, and guides provide all equipment.
The Tamarin River runs year-round but the volume and spectacle are greatest between December and April. The pools below the falls are swimmable in all seasons. Wear clothes you don't mind getting completely wet and bring a change of dry clothes for after. Several Mauritius adventure operators run guided canyoning tours that include transport from the coast.
