Rochester Falls is one of the most visually distinctive natural sites in Mauritius — a wide waterfall that cascades over a broad shelf of flat, geometric basalt columns, creating a series of channels and white-water chutes rather than a single clean plunge. The geometric precision of the basalt forms — the result of lava cooling at a uniform rate — gives the falls an almost architectural quality, as if they were designed rather than formed by geology.
The falls are on the Savanne River near the village of Souillac in the south, and getting there requires a 15-minute walk through sugar cane fields from the parking area. The path is flat and easy, and the sound of the falls grows louder as you approach. The first view of the full width of the falls — perhaps 50 metres across — is surprising; most visitors expect something narrower.
The natural pool at the base of the falls is deep and clear, and local families swim here at weekends. On weekdays, the site is often quiet enough to feel private. The basalt platforms above and beside the falls make natural viewing spots and are safe to walk on in dry conditions, though the wet rock is treacherous.
The falls look best after significant rainfall when the channels are full; in the dry season they run lower but the geological features are more clearly visible. Morning light (before 11am) is ideal for photography. Rochester Falls is easily combined with a visit to Gris Gris beach (15 minutes' drive), Le Souffleur blowhole, and the Souillac fishing village for a full day on the south coast.
