Mauritius Oceanographic Institute offers a marine excursion or water-based experience in the south of Mauritius, taking advantage of Mauritius' exceptional lagoon system and deep ocean channel.
Mauritius is surrounded by a coral reef that extends for approximately 150 kilometres, enclosing shallow lagoons that are ideal for snorkelling, glass-bottom boat tours, and learning watersports. Outside the reef, the ocean drops steeply into depths of 2,000+ metres, creating conditions that support large pelagic species including sperm whales, humpback whales, dolphins, and big-game fish.
The Mauritius Oceanographic Institute focuses on marine research and conservation. Visitors can learn about Mauritius’ underwater ecosystems and ongoing scientific projects.
The west coast of Mauritius offers the calmest conditions for marine excursions, with the Le Morne Peninsula lagoon providing exceptional flat-water clarity. The south coast channel — between Le Morne and Pointe d'Esny — is where sperm whales are found year-round and humpback whales pass through between June and October.
Marine excursions typically depart early morning (7–8am) when sea conditions are calmest and wildlife most active. For boat trips involving snorkelling or swimming, the best visibility is during the dry season (May–October) when runoff is minimal and trade winds clarify the water.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rashguard, and seasickness medication if susceptible — even calm lagoon conditions can be uncomfortable on smaller boats. Life jackets are provided on all licensed excursion operators.
