Macondé is one of the most vertiginous and striking viewpoints in Mauritius — a raw cliff edge on the south-west coast where the road cuts through a headland and gives way to an unobstructed drop of 270 metres straight into the Indian Ocean. There is no barrier, no cafe, and no admission charge — just a parking area, a path to the edge, and one of the most dramatic coastal views on the island.
Looking south from the cliff, the coast stretches towards Le Morne Brabant, whose distinctive basalt silhouette rises from the sea 15 kilometres away. The lagoon changes colour in bands from turquoise to deep blue to the pale green of the sand bars offshore. Below, the sea breaks in white lines on the reef directly beneath your feet. The height and the openness of the view create a genuine physical sensation.
This is also one of the best viewpoints for spotting the famous "underwater waterfall" optical illusion — the visual effect created by sand and silt washing off the southern tip of the island into deep water, creating what looks from above or from a drone like a waterfall cascading from the island's edge. On clear days with polarised sunglasses you can see the sand plumes from the cliff edge; it is most dramatic from a light aircraft or helicopter.
The viewpoint is on the coastal route between Baie du Cap and Le Morne, and is a natural stop on any drive along the south-west coast. There are no safety barriers — walk to the edge carefully, keep children close, and avoid the cliff edge in high winds. The morning is best for photography with the sun behind you and the light falling full on the coast ahead.
