Le Pouce — "The Thumb" — is the most recognisable mountain in Mauritius, its distinctive upright summit peak visible from Port Louis, the Moka valley, and much of the central plateau. At 812 metres it is the third-highest summit on the island, and the standard hiking route to the top is the most rewarding mountain experience accessible to ordinary visitors without specialist equipment.
The hike starts from Moka village, about 15 kilometres from Port Louis, and climbs steadily through scrubby hillside vegetation before entering a more dramatic rocky landscape below the summit. The path is clear and well-worn but steep in sections; good walking shoes are essential and hiking poles are useful on the descent. The total return distance is about 8 kilometres with approximately 500 metres of elevation gain.
The summit views are exceptional. Port Louis harbour is spread out below to the north-west; the Moka mountain range extends to the east; on clear days you can see the south-west coast and, in the opposite direction, the east coast lagoon. The panorama changes completely as you turn around the summit block, giving four distinct views in four compass directions. The very best visibility is usually in June and July when the trade winds blow consistently from the south-east and the atmosphere is clearest.
Start no later than 7am to reach the summit before the midday heat builds on the rock faces. The upper section is exposed with no shade and becomes genuinely hot between 11am and 3pm. Carry at least 2 litres of water per person. The hike is often done as part of a longer circuit connecting to the nearby Pieter Both peak for serious walkers.
