La Vanille Nature Park, set in a forest ravine near Rivière des Anguilles in the south of Mauritius, is one of the most enjoyable family attractions on the island — combining a serious wildlife operation with accessible, well-designed exhibits and good food.
The star exhibits are the giant tortoises, of which La Vanille has over 1,500. These are Aldabra tortoises, the largest land reptiles in the world, and at La Vanille you can walk freely among them, hand-feed them, and interact with them in a way that feels genuinely wild rather than zoo-like. The nursery section has hatchlings of various ages and explains the breeding programme in detail.
The crocodile section is the park's most dramatic feature. Some of the resident Nile crocodiles are over 60 years old and five metres in length — genuinely huge animals visible at close range from elevated walkways. The park runs crocodile feeding demonstrations that are spectacular in a primal way.
The butterfly enclosure is a delight — a large netted area planted with the flowering plants that Mauritian butterfly species depend on, with 30+ species present at peak season. The insectarium alongside it shows giant stick insects, beetles, and arachnids from across the region. There's also a deer park, a marmoset enclosure, and a children's playground.
The restaurant sits in a terrace overlooking the ravine and serves good Creole food — it's one of the better lunch options in the south. La Vanille works best with 3–4 hours. Morning visits are cooler and the animals more active. School groups arrive mid-morning on weekdays; go before 9am or after 2pm to have the park more to yourself.
