Eureka House — Maison Eureka — is the most intact and atmospheric colonial plantation house in Mauritius, a sprawling single-storey colonial mansion in the Moka Mountains that has survived almost completely unmodified since it was built in 1830. It is the best place on the island to understand what 19th-century colonial Creole life looked like, and the gardens and river it sits beside make the experience as much about landscape as architecture.
The house is famous for having 109 doors and windows — a local legend says the owner counted them and exclaimed "Eureka!" when he reached that number. Whether true or not, the proliferation of openings is architecturally intentional: the Creole style was designed to maximise airflow through the house to cope with tropical heat, and every room has cross-ventilation from multiple directions. The wide verandas, the raised floor, and the steep roof also reflect generations of accumulated knowledge about how to live comfortably in a tropical climate before air conditioning.
The interior has been restored using period furniture, artworks, and domestic objects that give a genuine picture of upper-class colonial life. The kitchen, the drawing room, the bedroom arrangements, and the servants' quarters are all shown, and the guided tour contextualises them with the social history of the period. The story of the various families who owned the house — French, British, and Mauritian — runs through the 19th and 20th centuries.
The gardens descend steeply from the house to the Moka River, where a trail leads to three natural waterfalls accessible in about 20 minutes. Swimming is possible in the pools below the falls. The restaurant on the terrace serves Creole lunch — the dholl puri and freshly squeezed juices are good. Allow at least 2.5 hours.
