About Domaine de L'Étoile

Domaine de L'Étoile is a 1,500-hectare private estate in the hills above the east coast, one of the last large landholdings in Mauritius that combines active forestry, agriculture, and conservation-oriented tourism. It is the most atmospheric of the island's several private domaine experiences, with a genuine wildness — deer, wild boar, and endemic birds in forest that has not been cleared — that the more tourist-developed parks lack.

The estate offers a range of guided activities that take you deeper into the landscape than you would get on a standard nature walk. The 4x4 safari drives through the forested interior are the most adventurous, following tracks used by the estate's game management team and offering good chances of seeing Javan deer (introduced in the 17th century by the Dutch and now wild throughout the estate) and Java sparrow flocks in the clearings. Mountain biking on the eastern escarpment trails rewards the effort with panoramic sea views.

The guided walks are the best option for wildlife. The dusk walk in particular — departing about an hour before sunset — passes through forest as the day birds go quiet and the nocturnal species begin to move. Fody, Mauritius grey white-eye, and echo parakeets are all present, and on still evenings the calls carry clearly through the forest.

The estate's restaurant serves Creole lunch using produce from the farm — venison, vegetables, tropical fruits — in a long wooden building with a terrace overlooking the forest. The quality is genuinely good and the setting makes it one of the nicer lunches available outside the coast hotels. A full-day visit combining multiple activities is the best way to experience the estate.
