Mare aux Vacoas Reservoir
As the largest reservoir in Mauritius, Mare aux Vacoas is surrounded by lush forests and serves as a peaceful retreat…
Le Morne Brabant is the most emotionally significant landscape in Mauritius — and one of its most visually dramatic. The 556-metre basalt monolith rises almost vertically from the south-western tip of the island, surrounded on three sides by the sea and on the fourth by a lagoon that turns an extraordinary shade of turquoise in the afternoon light.
The mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its role in Mauritian history. During the era of slavery (1721–1835), runaway enslaved people took refuge on its near-inaccessible ledges and cliff faces, creating a community in the mountain's hidden recesses. When emancipation came in 1835, a group of soldiers was sent to tell them — but the escaped enslaved people, seeing the soldiers climbing, believed they had come to recapture them, and many jumped rather than be taken. The irony that they died on the very day of their freedom is one of the most haunting facts in Mauritian history, and the mountain is treated with deep reverence.
Hiking to the summit requires a local guide — both for safety (the upper section involves exposed scrambling on steep rock) and out of respect for the site's significance. The guides are based in the village at the mountain's base and charge a modest fee. The climb takes 2–3 hours return and is genuinely strenuous. The views from the top — across the lagoon, south to Ile aux Benitiers, and west to the open Indian Ocean — are the finest on the island.
At the mountain's base, the Le Morne lagoon is one of the world's premier kitesurfing destinations, with perfectly flat shallow water and consistent trade winds. Kite schools operate along the beach below the mountain and offer lessons for all abilities.
