About Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth Geopark

The Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth is one of the most visually striking geological formations in the Indian Ocean — a series of volcanic dunes where the earth has weathered into seven distinct colours: red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow. The colours shift and intensify depending on the angle of light, and are most vivid on dry sunny days when there's no dust haze.

The science behind the colours is straightforward: the volcanic rock here is basalt that cooled at different rates, producing different minerals as it oxidised. The red comes from iron oxide, the blue-green from aluminium oxide, and so on. What is genuinely strange — and not yet fully explained — is that if you take the differently coloured sands and mix them in a jar, they will separate back into distinct layers within a few hours. The phenomenon has been tested repeatedly and still has no complete scientific explanation.

The formation is a small area — maybe 100 metres across — but the viewing platforms are well designed and the colours photograph beautifully. The ticket includes access to the adjacent botanical garden, a small geological museum, and a rum distillery where you can taste Chamarel rum and rhum agricole (one of Mauritius's finest). The Chamarel Waterfall, a 100-metre cascade that drops into a forested ravine, is 500 metres away and should not be missed — it's included in the same ticket.

Morning light (before 10am) brings out the deepest colour contrasts. Visit midweek if possible to avoid the coach tour crowds that arrive mid-morning. The combined visit — Earth, waterfall, garden, distillery — takes about 2.5 hours.
