La Pirogue

La Pirogue, a Sun Resort property at Flic en Flac, takes its name from the traditional Mauritian outrigger canoe, and that coastal spirit runs through the whole property: the circular thatched chalets echo the shape of traditional fishing huts, the beach bar serves rum punch in half-coconut shells, and the programme of activities is orientated toward the sea. The chalets are cleverly designed — deceptively spacious inside despite their circular footprint, with quality fittings and either garden or sea-facing terraces. The beach at La Pirogue is wide and sheltered, the lagoon ideal for swimming and snorkelling without needing to travel to the reef. The property is large enough to have proper facilities — multiple pools, a full water sports centre, a spa, and several restaurants — but small enough in feel to retain a community atmosphere where guests know each other by the third day. Dining swings between the main restaurant's Mauritian buffet, the overwater seafood grill by the lagoon, and the pizza oven by the pool. It is a reliable family resort — the kids' club is well-staffed and the pool area genuinely child-friendly — but it equally draws couples and groups of friends who come for the beach bar's rum selection and the convivial atmosphere. La Pirogue has been on this beach since 1972 and knows exactly what it is doing.
