CHAMAREL
The tallest single-drop waterfall in Mauritius at about 100m high, the Chamarel Waterfall is a striking piece of nature. Fed by the waters of three distinct streams pouring into Saint-Denis River, it has a powerful rush with a peak flow rate in excess of 40,000 m³ per minute.
Proceeding along the Seven Coloured Earth Geopark’s 3km access road, which makes for a scenic drive to the geosite, don’t miss the waterfall’s viewpoint on your left. Offering a front-row view of this wonder of nature, it can be accessed via a trail snaking through dense foliage.
Overhanging the ledge of a basalt cliff, the Chamarel Waterfall splashes into an oval pool before flowing down a 6km tropical-forest-fringed canyon to Baie du Cap. The sight not only floods the senses with freshness but it is also a spectacular showcase of millions of years of volcanic activity. The dramatic landscape if formed by lavas of two different ages. The layer of brecciated basalt near the base dates from between 10 to 8 million years ago, on top of which lies a second layer from the intermediate period between 3.5 and 1.7 million years ago.
The falls are located in the Black River Gorges National Park in the village of Chamarel in the southwestern region of the island, with another marvellous natural attraction called the Seven Coloured Earths near by.
No wonder why the Chamarel Waterfall is ranked among the most sought-after sightseeing spots in Mauritius!

EUREKA WATERFALL
The Eureka waterfalls enhance what is already a fantastic experience when visiting the colonial Eureka Mansion located south of Port Louis in the village of Moka. Enjoy the preserved antiquity of the mansion itself, wander around the tropical gardens and then explore the interesting (and challenging!) pathway that leads you down to the four separate falls that make up the intimate Eureka Falls.
The Eureka waterfalls are found in the Moka ranges near the Eureka mansion and are one of the most captivating waterfalls in the country. The Eureka mansion was constructed during the colonial era and all those who visit the falls also get to experience the historical part of the Island.
Once you get to the falls you will be able to see the different types of vegetation that surround the waterfalls, relax at the Eureka banks, get to watch some bird species that breed around the waterfalls, and also take as many photos as you want while at the falls.
ROCHESTER WATERFALLS
The unique Rochester Falls are regarded as the widest waterfalls in Mauritius. The area they are located in is isolated and wild, with thick green vegetation lining the surrounding cliff edges. The bizarre rock formations in the area are almost as magnificent to behold as the falls themselves. As wild as the area is, it is still an ideal venue for picnics as well as swimming.
The Rochester waterfalls located in the Savanne district are part of the wonders found on Mauritius Island that you should not miss visiting. Due to the continued flow of water on the rocks, they started changing their shape and at the moment they are rectangular in nature creating a unique pattern in which the water falls down into the abyss. They are also known to be the widest waterfalls in Mauritia and fall for about 100 meters.
Trekking is one of the activities that tourists who visit the falls engage in and it is also a perfect place for one to go and enjoy a picnic with their loved ones. While here you will notice that some locals tend to jump from the top of the waterfalls to the water below but if you are not used to it, it is better if you just spectate.
GRAND RIVER SOUTH EAST
The falls at the Grand River South East is a very popular natural attraction found on the southeastern coast of the island. A visit to these falls is often part of a trip to the Ile aux Cerfs, a beautiful privately owned island located in the largest lagoon on Mauritius. The scenery around the Grand River South East is spectacular and is the primary habitat for the island’s monkey population.
This is one of the most visited waterfalls in Mauritius and the best way for you to get a close look is by taking a boat trip. The boat trip towards the falls is an exciting one as you get to see many of the coastal villages located at the banks, the vegetation up close, a few aqua animals before reaching the falls that will blow your mind away.
You will however need to book the boat trip early enough so that you get the best experience out of all this. The activities that are mostly carried out here include the catamaran cruising and boat ride and you will also notice a quick change of color from turquoise to green in the water as you get closer to the waterfalls.
These wonderful waterfalls that are found within the Mauritius Island can be visited all year round and since most of you did not know that the Island had all these waterfalls, it is now time to grab a bag, plan your trip properly and go out to Mauritius and enjoy these waterfalls and all the fun activities that you get to carry out while here and do not forget your camera.
CASCADE MINISSY
Minissy waterfall is great for those looking for a quick and easy hike in Mauritius. The hiking trail is relatively flat and easy to follow, making it one of the best Mauritius waterfalls for beginner hikers.
About halfway through the hike, you’ll reach a picturesque viewpoint, plus you’ll also get a view of the various mountain peaks forming part of the Moka range.
Minissy waterfall is located in Moka, in the central region of Mauritius. The trailhead is found next to the roundabout opposite the PwC building. If you’re coming by bus, you can stop at the bus station next to the MBC building in Moka and walk from there.
EAU BLEUE WATERFALL
Eau Bleue is very well hidden in a valley behind trees near the town of Curepipe. The only way to reach it is via a climb down a vertical embankment. As I clung on to tree roots I understood why our lovely driver was reluctant to stop at Eau Bleue. It was an adventure in itself getting down to the falls, you wouldn’t even know it was there from the road. There was no one else at Eau Bleue, I presume it’s either not that well-known or people are put off by the climb down; which is totally understandable. This waterfall is stunning with the bluest water I have ever seen. If you do want to find it, please take care and wear sensible footwear; flip-flops are a definite no for the climb.

500 PIEDS WATERFALL
Cascade de 500 Pieds (also known as Cascade des Galets), is another one of Mauritius's many hidden gems. You can access the waterfall via a well-paved trail leading from the Alexandra Falls viewpoint.
Once there, you a treated to the most incredible views of the south coast and can indulge in a swim in its natural infinity pool.
The trail takes between 25 - 40 minutes and is one of the easier waterfall trails in Mauritius. The waterfall itself has a drop of around 500 feet and is a spectacle to behold.
MARE AUX JONCS WATERFALL
Mare Aux Joncs is situated in the Black River Gorges National Park whose entrance location is very local to where I live. The park itself is a great place to trek through and has a number of paths to enjoy. Access to Mare Aux Joncs waterfall is via a very winding trail that will take you across streams on several occasions and can be very difficult in places, especially if the ground is wet from recent rainfall. After 4.5 km you will reach your destination, which is a wall of water to which you will be standing at the base by its lagoon.
Taxing but very much worth it.
ALEXANDER WATERFALL
The Black River Gorges National Park is home to the Alexandra Falls which are serenely enhanced by the surrounding flora and fauna indigenous to the area that really help you connect with nature. There are refreshments available close by at the Alexandra Falls Viewpoint, though there are also possibilities to get away from the crowd and seek out a more tranquil spot to take in the incredible view.
Located within the Black River Gorges National Park, Alexandra waterfall sits 700 meters above sea level and the best way for one to get to the falls is by using the Plaine champagne route that is found in the national park. It is surrounded by a work of art that is provided by the dense vegetation that is practically endemic to the Island and when you get to the top of the falls, the beautiful scenery of the water dropping down into the forest below is one that you will not want to miss out on.
